These ideals are expressed through the balanced forms of the figures themselves. For instance, the large head of an infant is juxtaposed with the fully developed body of an adult, symbolizing the stages of life and the cycle of generations. The figures often adopt static, symmetrical poses with passive, expressionless faces, yet there is a tension conveyed through the depiction of bulging muscles, adding a dynamic quality to the overall composition.

These bieri figures not only served as protectors of ancestral relics but also embodied the values and aspirations of the Fang people. McEwan, an Englishman, established a school in 1956, transitioning students from painting to stone carving in 1965. The sculptures, crafted from stones like serpentine and soapstone using simple hand tools, showcase a unique blend of traditional African styles and modernist influences. Typically depicting human figures or animals with smooth, flowing lines and abstract forms, the creation process varies from a few hours to several weeks. The roots of Shona sculpture trace back to the 1950s when artists experimented with new styles influenced by both traditional African art and modernist movements. This art form, renowned for its distinctive aesthetic, has significantly impacted contemporary art globally, exhibited in museums worldwide. Despite enduring exploitation during the era of the Slave Trade, the Yoruba have preserved a rich tapestry of beliefs and rituals, prominently expressed through an extensive array of art forms. Yoruba art, spanning sculpture, mask-making, textiles, beadwork, and pottery, is revered for its aesthetic beauty and cultural significance. Notable examples include the Gelede mask, utilized in ceremonies to honor female spirits, and the Ifa divination tray, integral to divination practices. Yoruba textiles, particularly the indigo-dyed Adire cloth, showcase intricate designs and vibrant colors. This artistic tradition remains a vital component of Yoruba culture, celebrated globally. The oral history recounts a creation myth involving the descent of Oduduwa, the ancestor of all Yoruba, and the establishment of the Oyo Empire in the 15th century with Portuguese assistance. The 18th-century civil war and Fulani invasion prompted Yoruba migration southward, leading to the founding of Ibadan and Abeokuta.
