Ancient Islamic Trade Beads Roman Eye Gabri
Description
For centuries, eye beads have held great value among not only Islamic communities, but also among African cultures. They are believed to have strong protective and magical properties, making them highly sought after as amulets against the evil eye. These beads were produced in significant numbers for an extended period in the Middle East. The exact age of each bead is unknown.
These beads feature circular eye-like designs and were created through lamp work, inset, or mosaic techniques.
As an authority on beads, Robert K. Liu explains in Ornament Magazine that Islamic Period Glass Beads are categorized like Roman Period Beads, based on their characteristics such as patterns and techniques. These beads were first produced in the Middle East and became popular in the seventh to twelfth centuries. The intricate designs incorporate a variety of techniques and styles, such as millefiori/mosaic, trailed, filigreed, and fused rods. They were also used in amulet shapes, including charm case beads with loops, which were introduced by the Islamic world. These beads spread with the growth of Islam to North Africa, Southern Europe, India, and the Far East, and even made their way to North and Sub-Saharan Africa, where they were highly valued and used in important ceremonies and rituals.
