The figure is topped with a distinctive cylindrical coiffure, while the arms and legs are incorporated into the overall structure of the drum, creating a dynamic and sculptural silhouette.

Figural objects within Bena Lulua artistic traditions often carried cultural, ritual, or symbolic significance, with carved figures reflecting ideals of beauty, identity, status, and social transition. The elaborate scarification and coiffure seen on this piece are particularly characteristic of Lulua aesthetics and demonstrate the importance placed on bodily adornment within the culture.

The combination of a functional drum form with a highly stylized figural carving makes this an especially interesting example of Bena Lulua woodcarving. Its expressive features, intricate surface decoration, and unusual figural construction give it a strong presence as both a musical object and a work of African sculptural art.

Depth (in) 19.0
Width (in) 6.25
Height (in) 7.25

156955

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0826/1015/9911/files/IMG_9361_1a584c84-480f-449e-a3d8-c2f8fafa3319.jpg?v=1788291293
