The carving has a wonderfully expressive, simplified form with the distinctive character of traditional East African sculpture. Its compact size and strong silhouette make it especially effective as a sculptural display piece.

The Luguru (Waluguru) are an ethnic group of east-central Tanzania, traditionally inhabiting the Uluguru Mountains and surrounding region. Luguru carving is relatively less commonly encountered than the better-known sculptural traditions of neighboring East African peoples, making examples such as this particularly appealing to collectors of African ethnographic art.

Provenance: John R.
