The distinctive elongated form features a finely modeled male face with heavy-lidded eyes, strongly arched brows, a projecting nose, and an extended lower section decorated with bold geometric incised patterns. The face is painted in rich red and black tones with contrasting white details, while the upper portion retains an elaborate fiber coiffure.

The long, narrow construction and the extended chin or beard-like element are characteristic features of Pende Giwoyo/Kiwoyo masks. These masks were worn horizontally atop the head during Pende masquerades and initiation performances, creating a striking silhouette when viewed in profile. The geometric facial decoration, stylized eyes, and elaborate coiffure are important elements of Pende mask design.

The mask retains its original or early fiber attachments and exhibits an aged surface with considerable wear, pigment loss, abrasions, and other signs of handling and use. The combination of sculptural carving, polychrome decoration, geometric incision, and fiber work makes this an especially distinctive example of Pende ceremonial art.

The Pende, along with their neighbors the Yaka and Suku, can trace their origins to modern-day Angola, between the Atlantic Coast and the Kwanza (Cuanza) River. They were forced north to their current region during the Lunda expansion in 1620, which also resulted in numerous cultural influences. They are divided into two major groups, a western group who live just to the east of the Yaka and an eastern group who live on the western bank of the Kasai River. Although each group is culturally distinct they consider themselves as one people. The Chokwe expansion around 1885 engulfed most of the eastern Pende and some of the western group as well. Colonialism halted the Chokwe's expansion and allowed the Pende to reclaim their independence.

Very lightweight.
