Chiwandire frequently works with stones such as serpentine and springstone, creating highly stylized forms that emphasize the natural character and movement of the stone. This sculpture displays rich variations of brown, gray, and deep green-black tones, with naturally occurring striations and mottling throughout, characteristic of serpentine stone.

Shona sculpture, originating in Zimbabwe and named after the country's largest ethnic group, the Shona people, represents a distinctive fusion of traditional African aesthetics and modernist influences. Primarily carved from locally sourced stones such as serpentine and soapstone using basic hand tools, these sculptures often depict human figures and animals through simplified forms, smooth surfaces, and flowing lines. The modern Shona sculpture movement emerged in the 1950s, as artists combined established African artistic traditions with influences from modern movements such as Cubism and Abstract Expressionism to develop a distinctly Zimbabwean artistic expression.

Today, Shona stone sculpture is internationally recognized and has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. The practice continues to preserve Zimbabwe's rich artistic heritage while allowing contemporary artists to explore new interpretations of traditional forms. This work combines the natural beauty of Zimbabwean stone with Chiwandire's distinctive sculptural approach, making it a compelling example of contemporary Shona art.

Height (In) 11.5
Width (In) 8.5
Depth (In) 4.0

156963

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0826/1015/9911/files/IMG_9384_5bc4f2b0-3352-4c19-ac72-ac9add7b8b3c.jpg?v=1788294883
