Description
This antique wooden archer's arm guard, originating from the Hutu or Tutsi Tribes of Rwanda and Burundi, serves as a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of African sculptors. Known as "igitembe," it protected archers from bowstring-related injuries and held cultural significance, identifying wearers as warriors or elite. Adorned with copper squares, chief versions in the nineteenth century featured intricate copper inlays. Rare in collections today, this piece, bearing copper traces and signs of age, offers a unique and valuable glimpse into the history and heritage of the region.
