This is a time of deep pain for so many. Crying needs far outweigh our ability to meet them. But in the face of our agonized helplessness to meet them all, or meet them fully, we can and we must do something.
The virtual end of USAID funding is hurting millions of people worldwide. And, as is usual, the deepest impacts are in the poorest areas of the world. Millions of people are going to die of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. We can save a few.
Sara and I are doing something for SHOFCO (Shining Hope for Communities) in Kenya. We care desperately about this organization and the many people they serve, and are poised to take action. We are humbled to have the opportunity to match any gifts that you make, up to $10,000. We hope you will join us with a contribution of any size.
We have supported SHOFCO personally, and through our company, Africa Direct, which has contributed substantially through eBay for Charity, since its inception twenty years ago. We have watched with joy and pride as it has earned support from Newman's Own Foundation, the Clinton Global Initiative, Time 100, the Hilton Humanitarian Prize, numerous recognitions by Nicholas Kristoff in the New York Times, and much more.
SHOFCO does not receive direct aid from USAID, but its programs are deeply impacted by the cuts. Because of the closure of HIV clinics and the end of free medicines from USAID-funded programs, SHOFCO has already seen a 20% increase in demand at its clinics.
SHOFCO is the best-run nonprofit we know. They began with a school for girls in Kibera, Africa's largest slum, located in Nairobi. We were supporters as they prepared for their first class of fifteen kindergarteners. They now have schools for girls in two slums, two health centers, an extraordinary clean water program, and more. A dollar given to them has more impact than almost anywhere you can give.
We know the founders well, Kennedy Odede and Jessica Posner. We believe passionately in SHOFCO's mission. Our $10,000 represents the largest single gift we have ever made. These times call for digging deeper. Please consider joining us.
