3 Early Chinese Made 6-Layer Green Chevron Style Trade Beads
Description
Three 6-layer old green Chevron-style beads. One has been repaired.
These beads are an example of early Chinese-made imitations of Venetian-style Chevron trade beads, rather than original Venetian production. They were created to replicate the highly sought-after layered glass aesthetic associated with classic Chevron beads, but were produced outside of Venice, likely as part of later manufacturing efforts to meet growing global demand.
The beads feature the characteristic multi-layered star pattern associated with Chevron design, though with subtle differences in execution, glass quality, and finishing that distinguish them from true Venetian examples. The visible age wear and surface character reflect their history in circulation, while one bead shows evidence of repair.
Highly valued in African trade networks, Chevron-style beads were widely used as symbols of status and adornment across West Africa. While authentic Venetian versions remain the most historically significant, these early non-Venetian copies still represent an important part of the broader global trade bead story, illustrating how influential Venetian design became across multiple manufacturing regions.
