4 Loose Very Rare Round Millefiori Venetian Trade Beads
Description
These rare round millefiori glass Venetian trade beads are a standout example of historic glass artistry. The term millefiori, meaning “a thousand flowers” in Italian, refers to the intricate mosaic patterns created by embedding colorful glass canes (murrine) into a molten glass base. The result is a vivid, floral-like design unique to each bead.
Round millefiori beads are especially sought after, as their shape requires additional skill to achieve while preserving the clarity and symmetry of the complex patterns. Their balanced form, combined with vibrant colorwork, makes them particularly desirable among collectors.
Produced primarily in Venice during the late 19th to early 20th century, these beads were widely traded throughout Africa, where they held cultural and economic significance. Today, they are valued for both their craftsmanship and their connection to global trade history.
