African Iron Spear/Assegai with Leaf-Shaped Blade

Striking African spear featuring a long, slender wooden shaft and an elongated, hand-forged iron spearhead. The blade has a graceful leaf-shaped form, tapering to a sharp metal point and narrowing toward the base before transitioning into the long iron tang set into the wooden shaft.

Measuring approximately 64.5 inches in overall length, this spear has elegant, elongated proportions and a particularly strong vertical presence. The iron blade displays a naturally aged surface with dark brown oxidation and varied patination, while the wooden shaft has a dark, weathered finish consistent with age and use.

The form is characteristic of traditional African spear-making and is broadly comparable to assegai-type spears of southern and central Africa. Similar leaf-shaped iron spearheads are documented among the Zulu of South Africa, while related long-shanked iron spears with iron components at the butt are also known from Central Africa. A more specific ethnic attribution cannot be confirmed.

An excellent example of traditional African ironwork, suitable for an ethnographic collection or dramatic decorative display.

Materials are Hand-forged iron and wood.

Aged condition with natural oxidation, surface rust, patination, and wear to the iron, together with age-related wear and weathering to the wooden shaft. Please see photographs for additional condition details.
