2 Asante Adirkra Stamps Ghana MATTER COLLECTION

A compelling set of hand-carved Adinkra stamps from the Asante of Ghana, traditionally used to print symbolic motifs onto cloth. Each stamp is carved from wood with a handle and flat printing surface, bearing distinctive geometric or figurative designs that correspond to proverbs, moral values, and cultural philosophies central to Adinkra symbols.

These stamps would have been dipped in natural dye and pressed repeatedly onto fabric to create patterned textiles worn during ceremonies and important occasions. The varied motifs reflect themes such as wisdom, strength, unity, and resilience, making each stamp both a functional tool and a visual expression of Akan thought.

From the collection of Margie and Phil Matter. Margie lived in South Africa, and later she and her husband Phil opened a gallery in Tucson. Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
