Akua’ba (meaning “Akua’s child”) figures come from an Akan legend in which a woman named Akua overcame infertility after caring for a carved wooden child as if it were real. Today, these figures are associated with fertility, safe childbirth, and the health of mother and child.

This example reflects the Fante style, with a high, elongated forehead (symbolizing wisdom), a ringed neck (health and prosperity), and simplified features expressing ideal feminine beauty. Unusually, this piece includes defined hips and legs, adding to its character.
