Azande Mask on Custom Stand Congo

Zande (Azande), Democratic Republic of the Congo

A striking and unusually elongated Zande (Azande) wooden mask, attributed to the Ubangi/Uele region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The mask is carved in a distinctive flattened, oblong form with a long, narrow face, pierced eyes, projecting central nose, and a small slit-like mouth.

The surface is richly aged, with a deep brown to nearly black patina and surviving traces of red and dark pigment. Fine incised lines run vertically along the face and sides, while repeated short incisions along the upper edge create a distinctive comb-like border. The linear facial markings and elongated silhouette give the mask a particularly strong and graphic appearance.

The reverse confirms the mask's construction as a wearable object, with multiple perforations for attachment and a relatively flat, unfinished interior. It is mounted on a later custom metal-and-wood display stand, which is not original to the mask.

Zande masks are associated with the Mani/Yanda ritual and initiation societies, and documented examples include elongated masks with narrow, graceful faces and incised facial decoration. 

 Antique/vintage condition with extensive surface wear, abrasions, age-related cracks and losses, pigment remnants, and other signs of age and use. Please examine photographs carefully for condition details.

Damage/Repair: This mask displays age and use consistent with its history. There is overall surface wear, including scattered scratches, abrasions, and areas of patina loss. Minor nicks and edge wear are present throughout, particularly along the carved ridges and perimeter. The eye, nose, and mouth openings show expected wear from handling and age. No major cracks or structural repairs were observed from the front, and the mask remains solid and stable. Please review all photographs carefully for the best representation of its condition.
Overall Condition: Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents, and have been treasured by several owners.
