Bamana Wooden Bow Mali 61inch MATTER COLLECTION
Width: 2.0
Depth: 1.25
Description
This Bamana wooden bow from Mali is a striking example of traditional West African craftsmanship. Hand-carved from wood, the bow features a gracefully curved form with a rich patina developed through age and use. Historically, bows such as this were used for hunting and ceremonial purposes among the Bamana people, one of Mali’s largest and most influential cultural groups.
Its sculptural silhouette and weathered surface make it an impressive decorative object, whether displayed on a wall or incorporated into a collection of African tribal art and ethnographic pieces. The natural variations in the wood and hand-worked construction reflect the individuality and authenticity of the piece.
Provenance: Matter Collection
From the collection of Margie and Phil Matter. Margie lived in South Africa, and later she and her husband Phil opened a gallery in Tucson. Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
