Description
The Bamum of Cameroon are renowned craftsmen. Men traditionally practice embroidery, weaving, leatherwork, wood carving, and metalwork, while women produce pottery; both farm the land, cultivating maize, millet, cassava, and sweet potatoes. Bamum religious life centers on belief in a supreme creator and reverence for ancestors. In the Cameroon Grasslands, home to groups such as the Bamum, Bamiléké, and Bamenda Tikar, art is closely tied to royal authority.
Neck rings, such as this one, are worn by important chiefs among the Bamun people.
