Description
An old raffia bag from the Tikar or Bamunka groups in Cameroon. This version employs two carved figures for decoration. See similar examples and fascinating information on these bags in Paul Gebauer's ART OF CAMEROON. Similar examples are in the Gebauer collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Raffia bags were carried prior to 1950 by both men and women to denote a person's position as lineage head. Similar bags are carried by many other groups in Cameroon including the Bamum and the Bamileke.
