Description
This impressive mask is a Glin mask from the Goli masking tradition of the Baule people of Côte d’Ivoire. Goli is one of the most celebrated Baule masquerade systems—an all-day performance in which a sequence of masks appear, each with its own role, symbolism, and level of spiritual power.
Glin (sometimes called Ngoro Glin or Kpan Glin) is one of the most powerful and fearsome masks in the Goli cycle. Unlike the more familiar round “Goli Goflê” or the elegant human-faced “Kple Kple” masks, the Glin appears as a composite spirit of great strength, often incorporating features of buffalo, antelope, crocodile, and other potent animals. Its exaggerated horns, projecting snout, and bold geometric patterning evoke raw, supernatural force.
During performance, the Glin mask represents protection, ancestral authority, and the ability to confront malevolent forces. It is typically danced by an experienced performer whose vigorous movements emphasize the mask’s commanding presence. Villagers welcome its appearance as a sign of communal strength and spiritual safeguarding.
A dramatic and culturally significant work, the Glin mask stands as a bold embodiment of Baule artistry and spiritual tradition.
