Description
The Baule culture boasts a diverse array of masks, from detailed portrait pieces to grand headpieces representing animals like wild buffalo or antelope, intricately carved and adorned with vibrant paint. Among these, the Kplekple mask holds significance, linked to the spirit of the dancing young men in ceremonial performances. As an initial mask in dance ceremonies, the Goli Kplekple sets the stage, captivating the audience and paving the way for more significant masks to follow.
Typically symbolizing mythical animals within the Baule belief system, this Kplekple mask portrays an abstracted buffalo head with human-like facial features, characterized by slightly protruding eyes, horns projecting upwards, and a downward-pointing beard. Over time, its numerous repaintings, including the recent use of European-style enamel paints, have given it a glossy finish, reflecting its age and use. When worn, it would be complemented by a raffia costume, covering the lower section of the mask and extending below the waist, creating a visually striking representation of the enduring Baule tradition, continuously renewed through repainting to maintain its symbolic and visual significance.
