Description
The Baule people, part of the larger Akan ethnic group, reside in present-day Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. Their history is deeply intertwined with the rise and expansion of the Asante kingdom, from which they migrated approximately three centuries ago. The Baule's migration story is preserved in their rich oral traditions, which recount their split from the Asante during a time of political strife.
At the heart of this narrative is the Baule queen, Aura Poku, who, during the rise of the Asante, found herself in direct competition with the reigning Asante king. As the Asante emerged victorious, Queen Aura Poku led her people away from the Asante's increasing dominance and established a new home in the territory they occupy today. This act of resistance and independence has been immortalized in Baule oral history, reinforcing the queen's role as both a political and cultural symbol of resilience.
The legacy of Queen Aura Poku is further honored by the Baule through her male descendants, who continue to live in the palace she founded. He is regarded by the Baule people as their nominal king, maintaining the continuity of the royal lineage she established. This enduring reverence for Aura Poku underscores the Baule's deep connection to their heritage and the historical significance of their migration.
