Description
This Baule seated wood figure originates from the Baule peoples of Côte d’Ivoire, part of the larger Akan cultural group that also inhabits present-day Ghana. According to Baule oral tradition, their ancestors migrated westward several centuries ago during the rise of the powerful Asante kingdom. Led by the queen Aura Poku, the Baule separated from the Asante after a succession struggle and established new settlements in what is now Côte d’Ivoire. The legacy of Aura Poku remains central to Baule identity, and her descendants continue to hold ceremonial importance within Baule society today.
Baule figures such as this example were traditionally carved by highly skilled artists and served spiritual, commemorative, and ceremonial purposes. Seated figures often conveyed dignity, wisdom, leadership, and balance, with the calm posture symbolizing composure and inner strength. The Baule are especially celebrated for their refined sculptural traditions, characterized by smooth surfaces, balanced proportions, detailed coiffures, and serene facial expressions.
This figure reflects the elegance and artistry for which Baule carving is internationally admired. The natural wear and patina developed over time enhance its authenticity and speak to its history of handling, ritual significance, and age. A striking example of West African sculptural tradition, this piece embodies both cultural heritage and masterful craftsmanship.
The arm with the closed fist pointed upward had previously been broken off and has since been carefully restored and reattached.
