Boa Mask Congo Rohner Collection

Boa masks originate from the Boa people, a culture known for its rich sculptural and masking traditions. Boa masks are typically carved from wood and are associated with social, initiation, and ceremonial contexts within community life.

These masks are often characterized by bold, expressive facial features, including prominent brows, stylized eyes, and simplified yet powerful geometric forms. The surfaces may show remnants of pigment, encrustation, or patina developed through ritual use and age. Boa masks are traditionally used in performances that convey moral lessons, ancestral presence, or social authority, depending on the specific context and ceremony.

This example reflects the strong visual language of Boa carving traditions from the Congo region, combining symbolic form with expressive craftsmanship. A compelling piece for collectors of African art, tribal sculpture, and ethnographic works.

Provenance: John R. Rohner Collection
Rohner, a museum curator for decades, aimed his practiced eye for authenticity to African art beginning in the early 1980s. His passion for this art only grew through the decades he built his collection––always with an aim for a broad and representative array of pieces.
