Description
Mambele, Hunga Munga, throwing knife, African iron currency weapon, and Central African prestige blade. The form is particularly decorative and would display well as both an ethnographic artifact and a piece of African metalwork. Iron, fiber-wrapped handle.
This forged iron throwing knife features three projecting blades arranged around a central shaft, creating the distinctive silhouette associated with Central African mambele-type weapons. Produced by several ethnic groups in the Congo-Sudan region during the 19th and early 20th centuries, these multi-bladed knives served both practical and symbolic functions. While capable of being thrown in combat, they also acted as prestige objects, indicators of status, and displays of a smith's skill.
The knife is hand-forged from a single piece of iron and retains its original wrapped grip. Its sculptural form and complex blade arrangement exemplify the sophisticated metalworking traditions of Central Africa, where such weapons occupied an important place in both warfare and social hierarchy.
