Chevron Venetian Black and Blue Trade Bead MATTER COLLECTION
Description
A beautiful strand with both Black and Blue Chevron beads.
Highly prized in the African trade, chevron beads have long symbolized status and adornment. Counting chevron layers is done from the innermost layer (around the perforation) outward, with each layer distinguished by its color. These beads remain widely collected across Africa, Europe, and the Americas; in Africa, they are associated with prestige, worn during ceremonies, and sometimes buried with the deceased. A striking matched set, ideal for collectors or as a focal element in jewelry.
Provenance: Matter Collection
From the collection of Margie and Phil Matter. Margie lived in South Africa, and later she and her husband Phil opened a gallery in Tucson. Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
