Description
The Chokwe people are a Bantu-speaking ethnic group mainly found in Angola, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Chokwe carvings are known for their intricate designs and are used for both decorative and functional purposes.
This figure crafted from one piece of wood, portrays a Chokwe chief, or mwanangana, and captures the essence of power and sophistication that characterizes Chokwe art. It is attached to a custom base. His commanding stance embodies the authority and vitality of a leader. A protruding, round forehead and large eyes convey intelligence and sharp vision. The sweeping curves and full forms of the unique headdress represent a traditional Chokwe crown constructed from cloth-covered baskets. The chief grasps horns of the diminutive duiker antelope, evoking connections to hunting and the enigmatic practices of medicine and sorcery.
This sculpture portrays a Chokwe chief from the nineteenth century, while also paying tribute to Chibinda Ilunga, a legendary hunter from the Luba kingdom who is revered for bringing new governance principles to the Chokwe people. This figure symbolizes the harmonious merging of these two cultures.
Chokwe carvings are an important part of the Chokwe culture and are valued not only for their beauty but also for their cultural and spiritual significance. Today, Chokwe carvings are sought after by collectors and art enthusiasts around the world, and are considered to be important examples of African traditional art.
