Description
Vintage Congolese Carved Wood Male Figure, Central African Sculpture, DRC
A striking vintage hand-carved wooden figure depicting a standing male figure with an elongated head, stylized facial features, long arms, and a simplified cylindrical torso. The figure is carved in a dark, weathered hardwood with a naturally aged surface, visible tool marks, cracks, and areas of wear that contribute to its authentic character.
The figure rests on a substantial circular base decorated with repeating incised geometric patterns. A small metal loop and cord encircle the neck, adding an intriguing functional or ceremonial detail. The understated treatment of the body contrasts with the expressive, carefully modeled face, giving the sculpture a distinctive presence.
The piece is Central African in character and is attributed to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, possibly Lele (Lélé). The precise cultural attribution is uncertain, and the sculpture is offered as a vintage/ethnographic Central African figure rather than a definitively identified ceremonial object.
A wonderful piece for a collection of African art, ethnographic objects, or primitive/folk sculpture, with a particularly appealing aged surface and unusual geometric base.
Natural fiber around his neck, with a cowrie shell and a Dutch Donut glass bead. Nails in his arm and back.

Rohner, a museum curator for decades, aimed his practiced eye for authenticity to African art beginning in the early 1980s. His passion for this art only grew through the decades he built his collection––always with an aim for a broad and representative array of pieces. The collection appears in his book, Art Treasures from African Runners (2000, University Press of Colorado).
