Bamana Puppet Hobby Horse Mali 42 Inch
Width: 4.5

Description
The Bamana region features captivating marionettes, notably one portraying a horse with an intricately detailed saddle on its back. The artist skillfully crafted a puppet designed for mobility during performances, with a long neck and a rope attached to the head. These marionettes play a vital role in public masquerades in and around the city of Segou, an ancient tradition embraced by both the Bamana and Bozo communities.
Today, the festival is orchestrated by the region's young men, drawing inspiration from the Bozo people residing along the Niger River. The performances, known as Sogo Bo, involve dance troupes comprising members of local youth groups who engage in singing, dancing, drumming, and skillful puppet manipulation. While the spectacle serves as entertainment, it also serves a deeper purpose - conveying moral lessons about the imperfect nature of humans, the importance of ethical behavior, and the pursuit of a religious way of life. The marionette performances, thus, stand as a unique blend of art, entertainment, and moral education within the cultural tapestry of the Bamana people.
