Brass Bell Pendants Nigeria Ericson Collection
Description
Great collection of brass bells and beads ranging in size from 0.5-1 inches
Worn and weathered brass bell beads, shaped and designed similarly to those found among the Yoruba people in Nigeria and the Akan people in Ghana and Ivory Coast, are crafted using the lost wax technique. These aged beads are integrated into necklaces as individual brass pieces or worn as pendants. Fulani brass beads, traditional jewelry worn by the predominantly Muslim Fulani people across West Africa, bear cultural and symbolic significance. Worn by both genders, these brass or brass alloy beads display social status and boast durability and an appealing golden hue.
Available in diverse shapes, sizes, and designs—ranging from small to large, cylindrical to spherical, plain to intricately engraved—these brass beads often feature cultural symbols. They are commonly part of elaborate jewelry sets, such as necklaces, bracelets, anklets, and earrings, strung together with materials like thread, leather, or wire. They may be combined with cowrie shells, gemstones, or glass beads to create visually captivating designs.
Provenance: Ericson Collection
Marian Ericson was a creative collector located in Dallas, Texas with a keen eye for beautiful art and jewelry. Her shop, "The Creative Urge," was located in the popular shopping area called the Quadrange, in a three-story Victorian-style home. During that time in the 70's, she met many fascinating roaming artists and individuals including a vibrant man named Basara Susu from Gambia. Bins, shelves, and boxes would flood the creative space with new, old, and unfamiliar items, cherished by all. Marian held on to her beloved collection until she passed away in March of 2000 at the age of 66. Africa Direct is very proud to be the new owner of this extraordinary collection.
