Description
A stunning Lega Bwami Society hat from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Adorned with colorful buttons, cowrie shell beads, and a unique semi-circle design on top. A great collectible artifact.
The Lega Bwami Society hat was crafted in the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This woven, palm fiber hat is usually embellished with animal fur, beads, or feathers and represents authority and status within the Luba communities. Its distinguishing feature is the inclusion of buttons, called "bwami" or "bami." The buttons symbolize Bwami authority, and these hats are earned through rites and achievements. This piece is a masterful creation by the Luba people and would be an amazing addition to any African artifact collection.
