Description
The Lega people, also known as the Warega, reside near the northern end of Lake Tanganyika on the banks of the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They live in small village groups and govern themselves through a communal association called "Bwami," where male and female members strive to ascend through various ranks and demonstrate their knowledge. Lega masks, carved from wood with elongated faces, central ridges, almond-shaped eyes, and small mouths, are used in important ceremonies such as initiations, funerals, and celebrations. These masks hold great cultural and spiritual significance, representing spiritual forces and bridging communication between the living and ancestors. Collectors and art enthusiasts value Lega masks for their intricate craftsmanship and symbolic meaning, but it is important to note that they have deeper significance for the Lega people.
