Description
The Nupe, a group of around 500,000 individuals residing near the Niger and Kaduna Rivers in Nigeria, maintain a distinct identity despite geographical proximity to the Hausa. Their unique language sets them apart, unrelated to any known language. Influenced by Islam for centuries, which prohibits human depictions in art, Nupe artisans have excelled in adorning utilitarian objects with intricate geometric patterns. Crafted items like wooden bowls, calabashes, and textiles reflect their adeptness in blending artistry within cultural boundaries. Despite constraints, Nupe artists' skillful use of geometric designs showcases their adaptability and artistic prowess. Historically subject to the Igalas and later affected by Hausa and Fulani dominance, Nupe mythology reflects their turbulent past. Their culture remains vibrant and celebrated for its adaptability and historical significance in the face of social and religious limitations.
