The Deangle or Tangle mask represents a feminine portrayal, characterized by graceful movements and gliding steps during its dance performances. Believed to entertain and educate the village in peaceful pursuits, each Deangle mask reflects the artistic skill of its creator and the preferences of its patron. While variations exist, there are established criteria reflecting the cultural aesthetics and styles of the Dan people.
Historically, the Dan lived in small villages and towns, governed by a complex system involving family lineages, men's secret societies, and initiation ceremonies. Renowned for their masks, the Dan hold a belief that spirits known as Du inhabit the wild forests and manifest themselves through masks and masquerades, guiding and supporting the community. When a man receives instructions from a Du spirit in a dream to perform a masked dance, he commissions a carver to create a mask accordingly. Within Dan culture, masks are categorized into various forms, each assigned specific roles and responsibilities.
