The Dan people, also known as the Yacuba, are known for their distinctive cultural practices and exquisite woodcarvings. Sculpted figures, called 'lu me,' commissioned by prominent men, represent favored wives and symbolize fertility and family continuity, standing as stylized portraits with intricate details of hairstyles, body markings, and facial features. Created by skilled artists in secrecy, these sculptures were occasionally revealed in ceremonies, granting social prestige to the commissioner. The Dan, part of the Mande-speaking community, originated from Mali, residing in forested areas of Liberia, Guinea, and Cote d'Ivoire. They govern themselves through intricate family lineages, secret societies, and communal ceremonies, sharing cultural ties with neighboring groups like the Mano, Guere, and Wobe, characterized by their dynamic masking traditions and rich artistic heritage.
