Description
The Dinka headrest under consideration exhibits a stylized zoomorphic shape, with a uniquely formed hollow back and ends cut in the shape of animals, possibly horses, featuring silver metal studs for eyes. This headrest showcases a beautiful dark brown warm patina, revealing some signs of wear. The Dinka people, a Nilotic herder group in the Nile Basin, inhabit the vast savanna of southern Central Africa. While their historical background is somewhat obscured, the Dinka settled in the region around 1800 and have a reputation as formidable warriors, defending against the Ottoman centuries ago. Valiant warrior values are imparted through the initiation of young boys, who receive warrior equipment at the end. The Dinka's nomadic lifestyle is reflected in their art, with a focus on small, portable objects like stools and headrests. Carved from a single piece of yellowish-brown wood, these headrests, known as thoch, serve as both headrests and seats for old men and women. They also protect elaborate hairstyles and are considered highly personal, believed to house the soul of the owner. The Dinka's artistry extends to personal and body adornments, making them noteworthy in African art.
