Dogon Door Lock Mali MATTER COLLECTION

Traditional carved wooden door lock from the Dogon people of Mali, featuring the distinctive architectural and symbolic qualities associated with Dogon craftsmanship. Dogon door locks were both functional objects and protective spiritual symbols, commonly used on granary and household doors throughout the region.

This style of lock consists of a stationary vertical element mounted to the door and a horizontal sliding bar that secures the entrance. Iron pegs or teeth on the sliding mechanism engage with small openings to fasten the door, while a simple key would lift the iron components to release the lock. The pointed corners of the door itself often functioned as hinges within the traditional system.

The carved face and geometric features reflect the bold, abstract aesthetic characteristic of Dogon sculpture. Such imagery is often associated with ancestral presence, protection, and the safeguarding of stored goods and living spaces from both physical and spiritual harm. The lock’s sculptural quality transforms an everyday utilitarian object into an important expression of cultural identity and artistic tradition.

From the collection of Margie and Phil Matter. Margie lived in South Africa, and later she and her husband Phil opened a gallery in Tucson. Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
