Ejagham Ekoi Double Faced leather Headdress Nigeria

The Ekoi people, also referred to as Ejagham, are an ethnic group living in the far southeast of Nigeria and extending eastward into Cameroon's southwest region. The Ekoi have a close relationship with neighboring groups, including the Efik, Annang, Ibibio, and Igbo people in southeastern Nigeria. They are renowned for their Ekpe headdresses and use Nsibidi text, which they originally created, as part of their traditions.

The Ejagham Ekoi double faced leather headdress is steeped in cultural significance. This piece is made of solid wood. The base is wrapped rope and wicker covered in clay; the arch is wrapped in woven fabric; and burnished leather adorns the faces.

It is associated with the Ngbe, a men's society that uses distinctive head crests and ritual equipment for community regulation and initiation. Originally a warrior's society, Ngbe now engages in social and political activities, celebrating life events and honoring tradition through ceremonial items like head crests.
