Description
Ewe Doll, Venovi, Ghana/Togo, African Carving
A male twin figure carved from wood and mounted on a custom display stand. This finely rendered miniature represents a Venovi figure of the Ewe people of Ghana, where the birth of twins is celebrated as a blessing and a sign of good fortune.
Among the Ewe, twins—known as Venovi—are believed to share parallel life experiences. They are fed, bathed, and dressed alike to honor their deep spiritual connection. If one twin passes away, a Venovi figure is commissioned to represent the deceased child. The figure is then cared for as though living, washed and fed in order to maintain harmony between the physical and spiritual worlds.
Like the well-known twin figures of the Yoruba, Ewe Venovi dolls are often depicted in mature form rather than as infants, symbolizing continuity, balance, and ancestral presence. This example is a charming and meaningful miniature carving, valued both for its craftsmanship and for the powerful cultural tradition it embodies.
