Faceted Bohemian Milky Huge Trade Beads 34inch
Description
A striking strand of large, elongated, faceted Bohemian glass beads, distinguished by their soft milky white translucence and elegant tapered form. These impressive beads were produced in the historic glassmaking region of Bohemia—today part of the Czech Republic—which was a major center of glass bead manufacture from the 18th through early 20th centuries.
The beads are hand-faceted and polished, giving them subtle reflective planes that catch the light while maintaining their smooth, satin-like surface. Their long, spindle-shaped form and substantial size made them highly desirable in the African trade, where Bohemian glass beads were widely exchanged and incorporated into jewelry and ceremonial adornment.
The strand is accented with small coral-colored spacer beads and a single contrasting blue bead, all strung on a wrapped fiber cord. Beads of this scale and quality were valued as decorative and prestige ornaments and are today appreciated by collectors of historic African trade beads and antique European glass.
Examples such as these illustrate the important role Bohemian glassmakers played in supplying beads for global trade networks during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
This strand is not intended to be a ready-to-wear necklace. Although the strand can be worn "as is," the string holding it together is not durable and may break with use. For this reason, we recommend that you restring the beads before wearing them.
