Fulani Conical Hat Mali Niger MATTER COLLECTION

Description
A classic Fulani (Peul) conical hat, woven from natural plant fibers and accented with leather appliqué. This iconic form—associated with Fulani pastoralists across the Sahel—is defined by its broad, shallow cone, raised central knob, and leather reinforcement at the crown and brim.
Traditionally worn by the Wodaabe and other Fulani groups, the hat functions both as practical sun protection and as a marker of identity within nomadic cattle-herding cultures. Many examples include a leather chinstrap with tassel, while surface decoration may range from minimal to highly elaborate depending on region and maker.
The interplay of tightly woven straw and dyed leather elements gives each hat a sculptural presence, with subtle variations in weave density, profile, and ornament reflecting individual craftsmanship.
