German Wedding Globular Mixed Trade Beads
Description
This strand has slightly faceted globular beads, known as German Wedding beads.
A strand of antique globular glass beads commonly referred to as “German wedding beads” was produced in the glassmaking centers of Central Europe, particularly in regions now within the Czech Republic and Germany. These beads are characterized by their rounded, bulbous forms and luminous surfaces, often displaying soft translucency or opaque finishes in whites, blues, and pastel tones.
Despite the name, “wedding beads” does not necessarily indicate a direct use in European matrimonial ceremonies. Rather, the term is a trade designation that became popular among collectors and dealers, especially in reference to strands that were exported and circulated widely through global trade networks.
Many of these beads entered African trade routes in the 19th century, where they were highly valued and incorporated into adornment, status display, and ceremonial regalia across various cultures. Their durability, color, and form made them especially desirable in beadwork traditions throughout West and Central Africa.
Each bead is hand-formed, often showing slight variations in shape and size, a testament to their production prior to full industrial standardization. The surfaces may exhibit light wear consistent with age and use.
This strand is not intended to be a ready-to-wear necklace. Although the strand can be worn "as is," the raffia holding it together is not durable and may break with use. For this reason, we recommend that you re-string the beads before wearing them.
