Hemba / Luba-Hemba Caryatid Prestige Stool Congo

A striking and highly unusual carved wooden caryatid prestige stool, attributed to the Hemba / Luba-Hemba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The stool features a stylized figure in a kneeling position, supporting a broad circular seat, with the figure rising from a substantial circular base.

The figure is distinguished by an exceptionally large head, heavy arched brows, deeply recessed half-closed eyes, a long projecting nose, and a small mouth displaying carved teeth. The face and body are extensively decorated with incised geometric scarification, while the shoulders and arms feature finely cross-hatched patterns. The broad, horizontally projecting coiffure is elaborately carved, with geometric decoration continuing across the top and rear of the head.

The rear view reveals the distinctive swept-back coiffure and cruciform geometric design associated with Southern Hemba sculptural traditions. Caryatid stools of this type were important forms of chiefly and prestige regalia, associated with authority, ancestry, and spiritual power rather than ordinary household seating. Comparable examples in museum collections are variously attributed to Hemba, Luba, or Luba-Hemba, reflecting the close stylistic relationship between these traditions.

The stool has a rich, dark brown aged surface with substantial handling wear, abrasions, minor losses, cracks, and areas of surface accretion. The underside of the seat is also decorated with incised geometric motifs. Please examine photographs carefully for condition and surface details.
