Description
The Fetish Figure, originating from the border between Tanzania and Uganda, stands as a profound embodiment of ancestral veneration, steeped in symbolic significance. It encapsulates the spiritual essence and cultural legacy of the 'Kara' people. Crafted from locally sourced materials like wood, clay and glass seed beads, this group of three figures, 'Mother with Children,' is carved from wood and adorned with intricate wrapping of waxed natural fiber.
The Tanzanian Kara people practice animism which believes that all things - from animals and plants to inanimate objects like rocks and rivers, including humans and language - possess a spiritual essence and consciousness.
The semi-nomadic Kara live in round huts made of branches and mud with thatched roofs. Villages have 20-30 huts, a meeting place, and enclosures for animals. Men wear a cloth around the waist and over the shoulder, while women braid their hair and wear a pleated cowskin skirt.
With a dignified posture, expressive face, and tangible presence, this Fetish Figure serves as a powerful symbol of cultural identity, spiritual connection, and artistic ingenuity, highlighting the diverse cultural landscape of Tanzania.
