Kusu/Kasongo Male Ancestor Figure Congo Rohner Collection
Width: 4.75
Depth: 4.75
Description
A beautiful, hand-carved African tribal figure showing stylistic characteristics of the Kasongo peoples from the southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Magic on his head.
The Kusu and Kasongo carvers share deep stylistic ties with their neighboring Hemba and Songye cultures, which is beautifully reflected in the execution of this piece. Distinctive Chevron Beard: Features an elongated, highly geometric carved beard decorated with traditional chevron pattern incisions, a classic indicator of regional ancestral representation.
Provenance: John R. Rohner Collection
Rohner, a museum curator for decades, aimed his practiced eye for authenticity to African art beginning in the early 1908s. His passion for this art only grew through the decades he built his collection––always with an aim for a broad and representative array of pieces. The collection appears in his book, Art Treasures from African Runners (2000, University Press of Colorado).
