Description
Kela masks, associated with the Yela-Kela people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, have their roots in the ceremonial traditions of the Congo’s central-eastern forest region. Historically, these masks were connected to initiation and the Lilwa society, an important institution that helped regulate community life, teach social values, and enforce rules.
The masks are recognizable for their stylized faces, strong geometric patterns, and grooves.
