Kongo Virility Wood Figure Congo

Description
The Kongo people migrated into the lower Congo River region in the 13th century under the leadership of Wene. After the arrival of the Portuguese in 1482, the Kongo established diplomatic and religious ties with Europe, though tensions between Christian converts and traditional beliefs led to internal divisions. Following conflicts, invasions, and shifting alliances with the Portuguese, the kingdom declined and was ultimately colonized in 1885. The Abako political party later played a key role in independence in 1960.
Kongo wood carvings, including virility figures, reflect themes of strength, fertility, and lineage. These figures emphasize the male form and served symbolic and cultural purposes, representing ideals of vitality, status, and continuity within Kongo society.
