Description
This Kongo carved wooden half figure from the Democratic Republic of the Congo reflects the rich artistic and cultural heritage of the Kongo peoples, whose history is closely tied to the development of the historic Kingdom of Kongo. According to tradition, the Kongo migrated into the region during the 13th century under the leadership of Wene, eventually establishing a powerful kingdom in Central Africa.
In 1482, Portuguese explorers arrived along the Atlantic coast, beginning a period of diplomatic, religious, and commercial exchange. Relations between the Kongo kingdom and Portugal initially included formal diplomacy, with Kongo nobles visiting the Portuguese royal court in 1485. Christian missionaries subsequently sought to convert Kongo rulers and communities, introducing new religious influences that sometimes created divisions with followers of established spiritual traditions. Although the Portuguese were expelled in 1526, later conflicts, including the Jaga invasion of 1568, led Kongo leaders to seek Portuguese assistance. The kingdom never fully regained its former power and experienced centuries of political conflict and increasing European influence before the region's colonization in the late 19th century. In the 20th century, the Kongo political movement Abako played an important role in the struggle for Congolese independence in 1960.
Kongo artistic traditions developed within this complex historical and spiritual landscape. Wood carving has long been an important form of expression, with sculptural objects serving roles in religious practices, community life, and the representation of spiritual beliefs. This carved half figure offers a glimpse into the region's longstanding sculptural heritage and the enduring traditions of Kongo craftsmanship. From the Rohner Collection.
