Kuba Figural Cup Congo

Description
The Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are well known for their finely carved wooden objects, particularly their distinctive Kuba cups. Carved from a single piece of wood, these vessels combine practical use with strong visual design and were traditionally used during special occasions, often for drinking palm wine.
What makes Kuba cups especially striking is their figural decoration. Many feature carved human or animal forms with carefully detailed facial features, hairstyles, and accessories. These sculptural elements are often paired with incised geometric patterns—such as triangles, circles, and squares—that wrap around the surface and enhance the overall composition.
Because of their craftsmanship, cultural importance, and bold aesthetic, Kuba cups are highly sought after by collectors and are now found in museums and private collections around the world, reflecting the Kuba people’s exceptional artistic tradition.
This piece may also have originally formed part of a Kuba pipe, as suggested by its form, carving style, and the hole in the back.
