Description
Kuyu male figure with an animal (possibly a monkey) on his head.
Kuyu (Kouyou) standing wooden figure from the Congo region. The Kuyu are part of the larger Mbochi group, known for their distinctive carved forms and ceremonial art. Figures like this are typically carved from light wood and feature simplified, rounded forms with attention to hairstyle and facial detail.
Such sculptures are believed to relate to initiation societies and ritual life, reflecting spiritual beliefs and social identity. A well-balanced example of Central African carving, with a strong, expressive presence.
Both feet are broken off, so it doesn't stand on its own. It has a large crack along the back and two cracks in the front.
