Description
The Lega bearded mask originated from the Lualaba River near Lake Tanganyika in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This mask has a hand-painted patina on the face and a woven raffia fiber beard; displayed with a custom base. Lega masks are carved in wood and are known for their elongated facial features with a central ridge as the nose and almond-shaped eyes. These masks serve crucial roles in ceremonies such as initiations, funerals, and community celebrations.
