Description
The Lega bearded mask originated from the Lualaba River near Lake Tanganyika in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This mask has a hand-painted patina on the face and a woven raffia fiber beard; displayed with a custom base. Lega masks are carved in wood and are known for their elongated facial features with a central ridge as the nose and almond-shaped eyes. These masks serve crucial roles in ceremonies such as initiations, funerals, and community celebrations. The Lega mask is believed to facilitate communication and connection with ancestors and holds immense cultural and spiritual value for the Lega.
