A Lega figure carved into a Crucifix.
A hand-carved Lega figure originates from the Lega people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The figure is easily distinctive by the heart-shaped concave face with a slightly bulging forehead. Figures are often painted with white clay called "pombe" on the face, highlighting the facial features further. These sculptures were once used in ceremonies of the Bwami Society and symbolized various levels within the community and represented significant community figures like judges, senior society members, and leaders.
